The Oak Ridge High School Lady Wildcat Volleyball Team ensured at least a share of the regular-season District 4-AAA title with its commanding victory Tuesday night at Halls (25-14, 25-8, 25-7). “While today wasn’t the prettiest match we’ve played, securing the top seed is the first step toward a deep run through October,” said Oak Ridge Head Coach Dave Kolodney. “I’m glad that we were able to get that win today.” The Lady ‘Cats once again have secured the #1 seed in the district tournament ensuring them a first-round bye, leaving them with needing only two victories in the tournament in order to repeat as district tournament champions. “We definitely had a let down from yesterday’s high intensity match and struggled a bit with finding our own energy and momentum,” Kolodney continued. “That showed in the inconsistent nature of our play starting with serve receive which was either terrible, pretty good, or average depending on which set we are talking about.” The Lady Wildcats definitely started slow with their passing, but made up for it on the service line inflicting a devastating seven aces in the first set. Oak Ridge was just as lethal on the Attack as yet two new all-time records fell Tuesday night, with .574 hitting and 62.3% Kill. Piper Suddeth led the way with .800 hitting and 80% Kills on her 5 attacks. “Piper is player of the match. She served more than 25% of our points and had more than 20% of those fall for aces,” Kolodney said of his Sophomore Setter. “She led the team in assists and got our only block of the night.” The attack was consistent and strong across the entire front row, with all starters attacking over .500. “We certainly served well and put balls away when we needed to,” Kolodney finished. “I’m glad they were able to keep focused on tonight’s match long enough to secure the win before turning our attention to Thursday.”
Oak Ridge takes a day off for practice and film session on Wednesday and hosts Maryville on Thursday in a rematch of last Saturday’s tournament championship final. On Saturday, the Lady Wildcats will participate in the Courtside at Concord tournament. Oak Ridge improves to 23-3 on the season and remains undefeated in District 4-AAA play (10-0).
